Bienvenue Fotso Gunsi
b. 1989, Bandjoun
Bienvenue Fotso Gunsi is a Cameroonian artist whose practice centers on painting, with a particular engagement with botanical subjects and the intersection of scientific and traditional knowledge about the natural world. Working in acrylic on canvas with a meticulous, observational approach, she produces paintings in which plants and organic forms are rendered with a precision that is simultaneously analytical and contemplative. Her work engages with indigenous Cameroonian botanical knowledge alongside Western naturalist traditions.
Fotso Gunsi’s paintings address the relationship between human beings and the ecosystems they inhabit, and the ways in which colonial knowledge systems have mapped and transformed understanding of African environments. Her canvases maintain a sustained attention to visual experience — to the beauty of the observed specimen and the physical presence of paint — and situate her within a tradition of meticulous observational painting while engaging distinctly contemporary questions about ecology and knowledge.
Fotso Gunsi has exhibited in Cameroon and internationally, with presentations at art fairs and group exhibitions focused on contemporary Central African art. Her work engages in ongoing dialogue with artists and thinkers rethinking botanical knowledge and environmental history from African perspectives.
