The practice of Senzeni Marasela is internationally admired and exhibited. Appreciative for a long time of her works, especially those from the Waiting for Gebane series, we saw her exhibited at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art (I am… Contemporary Women Artists of Africa), Athens Museum of Contemporary Art EMST (Ubuntu), and El Espacio 23 in Miami (Witness).
Waiting for Gebane #23 was an unexpected and wonderful surprise addition to the collection when we learned that some of her works became recently available, coinciding with her two Waiting for Gebane shows at Zeitz Mocaa and Johannesburg Art Gallery.
The minimal and deceptive simplicity of Waiting for Gebane #23, the textile-based work and materials rooted in the origins of a specific place, and the themes speaking of the condition of the woman in a patriarchic society, displacement and economic inequalities connect deeply with the other works in the collection. This connection was kindly made (once again for us) possible by Julie Taylor from Guns and Rain.
