Commander Nel’s Archive

We discovered Helena Uambembe’s Confidential Histories, shaped by her archival research and family history around the trauma of Namibian-South African conflict, when she collaborated with Offsetculture.art. We have since followed her artistic journey and could not miss her wonderful collaboration with the venerable and prestigious Jo’Burg institution David Krut Project.  Commander Nel’s Archive is a series of unique pronto plate lithographs of various dimensions and techniques.  The artist uses the personal archives of Gert Nel, Commander of the 32nd or so-called Buffalo Battalion, to produce haunting palimpsests that represent the layers of memory through the interweaving of personal stories and history.
