I am woman

These photographs look back at the viewer, they show pride, strength, freedom, and womanhood. These works from Sanelisiwe (Neli) Nkonyane accompanied and document a work in which the artist knitted thick cords using broomsticks, a feat of strength and an ironical commentary on the condition of the woman in society. This freeing gesture as the artist herself acknowledged it (from her father) toward self-definition and affirmation felt incredibly powerful. This is a work that is both exhilarating because it is brave and daunting. It feels abrasive when it should not as it recalls the universality of gender inequalities. Another discovery thanks to Guns and Rain and her eye for new talents.
